Brace, Reset or Replace: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Most people call a leaning post “one problem,” but there are really three repairs hiding inside it, and picking the wrong one wastes money. Here’s the honest split.
Bracing is a timber or steel prop angled against the leaning post to hold it where it is. It buys time — after a storm, or while a proper repair is booked in — and nothing more. A brace does not fix a failed footing; the moment it comes off, or the next south-westerly rolls in off Bass Strait, the post keeps walking. Treat it as first aid, not surgery.
Resetting means digging out the shifted post, standing it back plumb, and pouring fresh concrete around the base. It’s the right fix when the post and rails are still sound and the only thing that moved was the footing. You keep the existing post and save the cost and disruption of a full rebuild.
Replacement is for when the post itself is gone — rotted through at ground level, snapped by impact or storm, or set in a footing that has sheared beyond rescue. Concreting around a dead post never restores it; the timber keeps failing inside the concrete. A new post, dug to the right depth, is the fix that holds.

Why Is My Fence Post Loose or Leaning?

How Do You Reinforce a Fence Post in Soft Ground?
Soft, sandy, or waterlogged ground is the scenario people most often ask about, because the standard “dig a hole and drop in some mix” approach doesn’t hold there. Reinforcing a post in soft ground comes down to spreading the load and keeping water away from the timber.
The concrete collar needs to be wider and deeper than it would be in firm clay, so it grips more surrounding ground and resists the post rocking. The base of the hole should let water drain rather than pool at the post — a footing sitting in a puddle rots timber and undermines the concrete. On genuinely loose sand, we sometimes step the footing or widen the base so it can’t simply slide. And material matters: galvanised fittings and, where it suits the fence, a steel post instead of timber take the coastal moisture far better than untreated hardware.
The thing worth being straight about is that soft ground is exactly where a DIY patch tends not to last. If the post keeps coming loose no matter how much mix goes in, the footing design — not the effort — is usually the problem, and that’s worth a professional eye.
Is Fence Bracing a Permanent Fix?
No — and it’s worth saying plainly, because the word “bracing” gets used as if it were a repair. A brace holds a leaning post in position; it does nothing about the reason the post moved. Once the footing has failed, the post is going to keep going over, and a prop only delays that.
Where bracing genuinely earns its place is safety and timing. A half-down fence after a storm catches the wind like a sail and can come over onto kids, pets, or a car — bracing it upright makes it safe while a proper repair is arranged. It also holds the line when a replacement is planned but not yet booked in, or when the movement is minor and we’re re-packing concrete around a base that only shifted part-way. Beyond those, if someone’s selling you bracing as the finished job, they’re selling you next winter’s problem.
Should You Repair or Replace a Fence Post?
This is the decision that saves — or wastes — the most money, so it’s worth walking through how we weigh it on site.
We repair (reset) when the post and rails are sound and the footing is the only thing that moved. Re-plumbing a good post in fresh concrete is quicker, cheaper, and less disruptive than a rebuild, and there’s no sense replacing timber that’s still doing its job.
We replace when the post has failed: rotted off at the collar, snapped, or twisted so the rail joints have pulled apart. The tell is usually below the ground line — a post that looks fine from the yard can come out soft and grey at the base. Replacing it once, properly, beats resetting a dying post and being back out there next season.
Two more things tip the call.
